Health Careers

Interns learning about the Health Industry at Roper Day Hospital.

Ronald Nelson, graduate of Cross High School and Brittany Greene, senior at Berkeley High School, are two lucky students. They are interning at Roper Day Hospital in Moncks Corner, exploring their interest in health careers. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to explore the various careers in this critical needs industry. The program is designed to allow students’ opportunity to work in a healthcare environment for six weeks. The health industry is so diverse and students have limited career knowledge of the many opportunities available in most any interest area they can imagine.

I visited Ronald and Brittany this week at their work site. Brittany said she is exploring surgery, ER, physical therapy and radiology. She is so thankful Roper partnered with our schools and The Regional Medical Center’s Auxiliary to provide this training. She hopes more students will take advantage of this in the future. She has explored areas she had never considered previously as career options.

Ronald feels what helps him so much is the mentoring the health professionals provide. They volunteer school information, share career options available, and answer questions concerning health courses and majors. Ronald loves chemistry, so he found his niche area to be in the test laboratory.

They both stated the evidence of professional teamwork by the staff in helping the patients with their problems and the their professional respect for assisting each other without a prompt.

Brittany plans to attend Clemson University and Ronald will be a freshman at Winthrop.

This opportunity is coordinated with The Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) is offered through the generosity of The Regional Medical Center’s Auxiliary who financially sponsors this program.
