President’s Message
Tammy Haile
Whom have you told lately about the benefits of your membership in SCACTE? Did you tell them that South Carolina won the Quality Association Award at the ACTE Convention in St. Louis,Missouri?
Our national association ACTE commended South Carolina for
taking the time and effort to complete this lengthy
application process. This award signifies the level of
service that South Carolina ACTE delivers to its members as
well as the way in which the SCACTE Board advocates for
career and technical education in South Carolina.
Did you tell them that SCACTE would be hosting the ACTE Region II Conference
in 2012 in our own beautiful city of Greenville, SC? Did you tell them that we need their help to make
this a successful conference? Did you tell them that our career and technology weighting could be
reduced if we are not diligent in our efforts to contact our legislators?
SCACTE must continue to keep legislators and other policymakers informed on how Career and Technical Education positively
affects increased graduation rates and lower dropout rates statewide, and it is important that our funding at the state
level remains level. As you might remember last year, it was proposed that the
weighting for a career and technology education student be
changed from 1.29 to 1.20. It was our organization, SCACTE, who testified in
front of the House Ways and Means Committee to educate them
on the urgency in keeping the weighting at 1.29 and it was
so ordered (Weightings Bill H3013). However, Senator Hayes’, who is the chairman of the
Education Committee, Weightings Bill S433 still has the CTE
weighting at 1.20, and both of these bills are in the Senate
now. The Senators will decide the weighting. Recently, my school district had a legislative forum,
and I was fortunate to talk with my senator one-on-one about
the weightings bill. He is now on guard to look out for this bill with the
1.29 weighing still intact (H3013); however, he was unaware
of the decrease in CTE weightings until our conversation.
Did you tell them about the ACTE National Policy Seminar in
March 2012? During the past year, a constant theme has been “advocacy.” It is more important now than ever - whether at the
national, state or local level. Advocacy is not always an easy job; however, by being
engaged ourselves and also engaging our business, industry
and education partners, we can add new and important voices
to South Carolina’s advocacy conversation. We have the message about career and technology
education that our stakeholders need to hear; we will have
that opportunity to visit with our Congressmen at the ACTE
National Policy Seminar, March 5-7, 2012.
I encourage you to find one or more of your career and
technology education colleagues who is not a member of
SCACTE and tell them that we need them to join the
organization that gives them a voice at the local, state and
national levels.
Tammy M. Haile, Your SCACTE President
